Who Is This ‘Man’?

Today’s Devotion
Topic: Who Is This ‘Man’? (Self Assessment)

We bless God for another Saturday. We want to study and meditate on His Word and encourage one another with the insights that the Holy Spirit will give us.

Text: Mark 4 : 35 – 41

35 As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” 36 So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind. 37 But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water.

38 Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?” 39 When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the water, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40 Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

41 The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!” Amen.

Questions
1) According to verses 35 & 36, Jesus said to His disciples; “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake, ….. leaving the crowd behind”. In your opinion, what could “the other side of the lake” represent in the life of a believer and what does “leaving the crowd behind signify?

  1. Why at all will it be necessary that we “leave the crowd behind” as we try to get to “the other side of the lake”?

3) It was Jesus’ idea that they moved to the other side. Do you think He knew of the impending storm before they embarked on their journey? If so:

a. why did He make them go that day and not another, when the weather would be fair?

b. why didn’t he prevent it?

4) The passage records that, Jesus was asleep at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. Does this reveal that He is mostly inactive and insensitive during our moments of trials? If no, why then did He “sleep” through the storm until the disciples woke Him up? if yes, why will He do that when He knows He’s the only defense we have?

5) Have you ever been in a situation where you had to ask God, “Don’t you care that I’m drowning?” What accounted for that?

6) From verses 39 and 40, Jesus rebukes the storm and asks them, “why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith? Does this imply that FAITH is a vital ingredient in overcoming the day to day challenges we face? Kindly explain your answer.

7) The disciples had lived and walked with Jesus for some time, yet they asked; “Who is this man?” Do you think that it is possible for Christians to walk with God and still not ‘know’ Him or experience His full power?
