Running From God?

Today’s Devotion
Topic: Running From God?
Text: Jonah 1: 1- 3

1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord. Amen

Many of us would rather wait on the Lord for a word. We cry day and night, “Speak to us Lord like you did Samuel, let us know your voice. Use us for your glory, send us to the nations! Wherever you send, Lord, I will go”. We pray this amid tears with all sincerity until He speaks; then we run away.

We run from the call. We run from the great commission. ‘This is not what we expected Him to say’. At least He should send us anywhere else but “Nineveh”. A city notorious enough to provoke the anger of God? What if they don’t believe us; what if they ridicule us; what if we lose our reputation; what if we die? No! it’s too risky to obey the Lord on this assignment; it’s time to run.

The question however is, “where can you flee from His presence? (Psalm 139: 7b). The Lord is everywhere and sees everything. He will not send you on a mission you are not equipped for. And for every commission, He has promised never to leave nor forsake you even to the end of time.

When He says go, it means you are the best person equipped for that assignment. Your obedience to that command brings glory to His name and opens supernatural doors for you. Identifying and doing His will for your life is your destiny being fulfilled.

Hence, don’t run away from the Lord again. Don’t run from active service in your church. Don’t run from your calling to serve as a pastor, deacon, evangelist, teacher, leader or caregiver of the sick, aged, poor, widowed and destitute.

Remember the gifts and callings of the Lord are irrevocable (Romans 11: 29), and we have a “GREAT COMMISSION” to fulfil. God is not going to change His mind about His assignment for you. Like Jonah, all who run from His call, later meet Him waiting exactly where they planned to hide, with the call bearing their names still in His hands! Meditate and begin to pray now.
