Watch Out!

Today’s Devotion
Topic: Watch Out!
Text: 1 Corinthians 10: 12- 13

So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. Amen.

When travelling or even driving around town, we commonly come across signs such as: 2Km to Point B, 100m to gas station, 5 Blocks to Mall and the likes; just to guide and inform us, so we know what speed or caution to apply.

How easy it would have been if along life’s path too, we came across sign posts such as; 10 Km to hell, 2 more days to death, a week to rapture, 1 more act of faithfulness to Heaven, 1 more soul to be won to get a crown, and the likes. The reality is, we can never get it this way.

A ‘standing’ Christian is one who has cultivated the habit of spending quality time with God in order to know His Will and please Him always. This Christian does not joke with his/her prayer and Bible study times. He is quick to witness to others whenever the opportunity arrives, and he does not make up excuses to stay away from the gathering of the brethren; he is simply consumed with the zeal for the Lord. Anytime we find reason to drift away from any of these, we are not far from ‘falling’.

Backsliding always takes place gradually until one day, one looks back and sees how far from the Lord he/she has drifted. In the verses preceeding our text (1 Corinthians 10: 12), the Apostle was highlighting some of the things the people of old did that did not please God, such as idolatry, sexual immorality, grumbling and testing God.

The truth is, per human nature, it is always easy to get a false sense of purity because, for instance, we do not bow down to idols, commit sexual immoralities, engage in gambling nor test God. Unfortunately, this is the one mindset that has also seen many take their focus off Christ. Yes, the very misconceptions that they are right with God. A people standing who can never know a fall.

We rather need to submit to God’s grace always, to see us through each day’s challenge, activities and temptations. Knowing very well that God will not let us be tempted beyond what we can bear. Yet with each temptation, He will provide a way of escape. Being as wise as a serpent yet innocent as a dove, you must “put on all of God’s armor. Evil days will come. But you will be able to stand up to anything. And after you have done everything you can, you will still be standing.” ( Ephesians 6: 13)

Begin to pray and ask for the influence of the Holy Spirit to order your steps so that you will stand firm for Christ always! Plead that He helps you watch and pray so you do not fall into temptation. Tell the Lord to keep His word as a lamp to your feet and light unto your path. Stand upon Christ, build on Him as our firm foundation, and you will remain standing even in the heat of the storm. See you at church. Click and be blessed: https://youtu.be/-Yc6cNbMl4k
