The Spiritual Scale

Today’s Devotion
Topic: The Spiritual Scale
Text: Daniel 5: 25, 27

25 “This is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN, 27 Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting. Amen

It is absolutely necessary that we assess ourselves and the things that surround us from time to time. Same is imperative for our Christian journey too. We ought to assess ourselves often to:

i. Ensure our walk with the Lord still remains intact. And that our ways still please Him. Where we realise we have fallen off the height of our first love, then we do all we can rise back up again.

ii. Evaluate our performance so far in achieving set goals and targets in our lives. Regarding our christian walk, to ascertain whether or not our labour in the Lord is yielding high for His glory. Even as the Holy Spirit (Himself) empowers us through obedience, love and faith.

iii. Ensure we are living in harmony with all men. According Romans 12: 18, “If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” We are to reflect deeply each day to be certain whether we have demonstrated the love of Christ in a manner that has blessed those around us or vice versa?

Generally, these assessments can be done by juxtaposing scripture with our personal observations about how things are, how things have been and how things could have been. We can also deduce from the comments and suggestions people make to us, and learn from them.

To be honest, personal assessment is very important for all. Our inability to evaluate our lives makes it difficult to know if we’re actually in right standing with the Lord or not. It also helps us to know whether we are making progress at all in whatever good thing we set out to do.

Paul says “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?” (2 Corinthians 13: 5)

Beloved! the truth is God will one day put us all on His Spiritual scale and weigh us. Like Belsharzzer, all who fall below standard will be found wanting. When that day comes, may we be as bold as Job to say: “Let God weigh me in honest scales and He will know that I am blameless” (Job 31:6)

Until then, it’s better we be like David, whose daily prayer was: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. (Psalm 139: 23-24).

Begin to pray now. Get back to the height you may have fallen from and press ahead till the day our Lord appears. “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness,” saith the Lord. (2 Corinthians 12: 9).

“Let us, then, hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we have a great High Priest who has gone into the very presence of God – Jesus, the Son of God. Our High Priest is not one who cannot feel sympathy for our weaknesses. On the contrary, we have a High Priest who was tempted in every way that we are, but did not sin. Let us have confidence, then, and approach God’s throne, where there is grace. There we will receive mercy and find grace to help us just when we need it.” (Hebrews 4: 14- 16). See you at church.
