The Lord’s prayer (Part 2)

Today’s Devotion
Topic: The Lord’s prayer (Part 2)
Text: Matthew 6: 10

Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.

This is day 2 of our exposition on the Lord’s Prayer. In discussing today’s passage, we will keep our focus on 3 thematic areas: “Thy Kingdom Come”, “Thy Will Be Done” and “On Earth As It Is In Heaven”.

1. THY KINGDOM COME: When we say “THY KINGDOM COME”, it is to say, we acknowledge the existence of a rulership or a higher authority to which we must surrender. A much better kingdom than what we know or will ever know here on earth.

2. THY WILL BE DONE: When we say “Thy will be doneā€¦” ,we are subjecting our imperfect desires to the perfect Will of our Holy Father. You see, God made man in HIS own image. Amongst the many characteristics man has inherited from God is, THE WILL.

A WILL, simply, can be described as an intent, a thought, a desire, a plan, a purpose or a wish to do something. Unlike the intentions of God that are pure, holy and good towards mankind, the intentions of man towards himself and his fellow brother are mostly unholy, selfish and sinful.

In Jeremiah 29:11, God says; For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

In the subconsciousness of man is EGO; a strong desire to be independent and thus take credit for everything good that happens around us. Until we surrender these human desires, plans and thoughts to God and allow His will to be rather supreme, we declare independence and do not acknowledge the supremacy of God. Proverbs 16: 3 therefore encourages us to “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.”

3. ON EARTH AS IT IS IN HEAVEN: Heaven is perfectly ordered according to the Will of God. There is no contradicting God there. The angels of heaven absolutely obey God and seek to please only Him. They have no pleasure except to do our Father’s Will. They have no time to gossip, backbite, cheat and hate one another. We invoke the ORDER of heaven over our earthly imperfections therefore when we say, “thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. When we refuse to pray the Will and Perfection of God on earth, we are indirectly allowing satan to dominate earth with hell’s wickedness and curse.

So, whenever you say, “Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven”, know that it is an act of total surrender to God. It explains that the motive of your prayer is not evil and your request is not selfish. You seek rather that the Will of God is perfected not only in your life but on earth as a whole and that is beautiful. Begin to pray. Ask God to take charge of your life.
