Love God, Not Money!

Topic: Love God, Not Money!

Text: Ecclesiastes 5: 10

Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless. Amen.

Money is good, but we are not called to love it. With it, so much good can be achieved yet it can also corrupt your soul entirely till you neither fear God nor care about mankind.

Many of us who have had a difficult background of lack and poverty, tend to equate or rather reduce the blessings of God only to “Riches”. The assumption is that the “Richer you are, the more blessed you are by God.”

We are therefore never content with the provisions of God. We are rather likely to pull more strings, and cut corners to get much more so we can prove how ‘blessed’ we are. But the truth is that, the blessing of God is much bigger; riches are only a minor component of it. It is rather the “blessing of the Lord that maketh rich” (Prov 10: 22), not the riches of a man that proves he’s blessed.

Apostle Paul warns that “those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap, and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” (1 Tim 6: 9-10)

Brethren, ours is to love God with all our hearts, and work diligently. Honestly, “lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth” (Prov 10: 4). When the focus and attention is on trusting God and hard work, we get supplies from the abundance of His household and our needs are met. We get satisfied with what we have and look to Him to give more in due season.

However, if we love money more than God, we never seem to have enough of it. We remain covetous and dissatisfied until our discontentment leads to harmful desires that plunge us into destruction.

Beloved, meditate on this word and begin to pray. Ask for grace to seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness and all other things will be added unto you.
