Christian Vigilance: Lessons From Jude’s Letter to Believers! (Part 1) (Self Assessment 151)

Today’s Devotion
Topic: Christian Vigilance: Lessons From Jude’s Letter to Believers! (Part 1)

(Self Assessment 151)

Background: Today, we begin a simple study on the book of Jude. His primary concern was for believers to preserve the faith and to watch out against those things that could easily distract them.

The Christian walk is a journey that is full of ups and downs. It is also one that has rewards for all who endure to the end. But how do we remain vigilant through each trek; how do we preserve the faith, and whom are we to be wary of?

For answers to these and more, let’s zoom straight into today’s discussion. Gather everyone around, it’s time to study the Word.

Text: Jude 3- 7

3 Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people. 4 For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

5 Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling — these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.

7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire. Amen

Questions:

i. How do we contend for the faith, as stated in verse 3?

ii. Why do you think in a situation where Jude would have rather loved to talk about the salvation we share, he felt COMPELLED to urge us to contend for the faith we have received? (Vrs 4)

iii. So in your opinion, who are those “individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago who have secretly slipped in among us”? You may reference other scriptures to reveal exactly what was written about them. And explain how you believe such people have secretly slipped in among believers today, as they did in the days of Jude.

iv. Jude described them as “ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign Lord.” Please explain this.

v. What do verses 5- 7 imply?

vi. From all the above, how vigilant should believers be regarding the faith, and how can we ensure that we do not become victims of ungodly people who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality?

vii. What have you learnt from today’s study?
