Today’s Devotion

Topic: Prayer Of Desperation

(Self Assessment 169)

Part 4

Background: We know from our previous studies that after Hannah gave birth, she asked her husband for permission to stay behind, each time they were to go to Shiloh, just to wean the boy so that she presents him later. Let’s see what happened afterwards.

Text: 1 Samuel 1: 24- 28

24 After he was weaned, she took the boy with her, young as he was, along with a three-year-old bull, an ephah of flour and a skin of wine, and brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh. 25 When the bull had been sacrificed, they brought the boy to Eli, 26 and she said to him, “Pardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord. 27 I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him. 28 So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there. Amen

Questions:

1. Kindly read verse 24 again. In fulfilling her vow, Hannah did not only take Samuel to the Lord, but she added some other gifts that could have monetary value in our day today. Why do you think she did so and what is its significance to us?

2. From verses 25-27, we see that Hannah presented Samuel to Eli and reminded the priest that if there were many women who came to pray in Shiloh, she was that particular one who stood by him and prayed desperately. Can a person engage Heaven so intensely that that special moment becomes a memorial between they and God, and the people who may be “privileged” to have witnessed it?

3. Read verse 28 again:

a) What was Hannah’s initial vow?

b) Did Hannah fulfil her vow?

c) What about that verse shows that Hannah had always been determined to honour her vow?

4. What have you learnt from today’s discussion?
