Your Gift!

Today’s Devotion
Topic: Your Gift!
Text: Proverbs 18:16

A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men. Amen

By now, we can all agree and relate to the fact that, a container is priced based on the content it is filled with. For example, a tin of milk is priced based on the quality and type of milk it contains. Once the content of the container is used, it is only fit for the bin for recycling, not the shelf of an airconditioned supermarket.

A gift is a talent or an  endowment; a special ability to do something that others can not do ordinarily. Athletes are hailed for their great ability for physical endurance. Musicians are hailed for their wonderful voices. All these people have been able to make such great impacts because their “gifts” have defined the kind of honour that comes to them.

There are many many natural and spiritual gifts. God blessed us all with a gift or many. Harnessing it is the problem. It takes great discipline, training, coaching, consistency and persistence to develop these gifts that will make you stand out.

But do we want it that way? No! It’s been easier to blame God for no gifts and talents given than to discover and harness them.

Sometimes we confuse the role of our natural gifts and formal education. Obviously, we prefer the latter to the former because we attain certificates for jobs. But you see, formal education offers programmes and courses designed to sharpen our creativity, stimulate our minds and equip us with skills for life.

All these tools mentioned above, together with the knowledge acquired,  thrive on the natural gifts/ endowments to produce that unique personality and excellent professional you want to be.

For instance, two intelligent broadcast journalists, trained by the same lecturers, hit the job market and one is immediately employed because he has a great VOICE for radio. All the knowledge acquired at school thrives on the great gift developed to make him stand before great men.

Go ahead therefore and be grateful for your gifts and talents. Ask for the corresponding wisdom and passion to develop them for God’s use. Read more about them and the discipline required to make them grow. Start practicing what you learn under the supervision of a mentor, elder or senior colleague. These gifts will take you far, and make you stand before great men.

Desire spiritual gifts too. They help edify you and the church. They also enable us work for God and impact our world. Always remember that your life is not a mistake. There’s some greatness in you that makes you special. God has blessed us in the heavenly realm with all spiritual blessings (Ephe 1:3).

The Holy Spirit is able to help you discover and develop your gifts; so  you can radiate the glory of God through your work! Will you let Him?
