The Tongue: Uses & Effect (Part 2)

Today’s Devotion
Topic: The Tongue: Uses & Effect (Part 2)
Text: Ephesians 4: 29

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Amen

Yesterday we discussed the negative effect of the misuse of the tongue on the individual. Today, we wish to explore the negative impact this same tongue can have on our hearers (others).

EFFECT ON OTHERS:

1. Lying to destroy others: Proverbs 25: 18 says: “Like a club or a sword or a sharp arrow is the man who gives false testimony against his neighbor”. People of all classes lie for various reasons. From Proverbs 25: 18, it is obvious that lying on others is synonymous to destroying them in one way or the other. How? Simple:

-Like a club: a club is a stout stick usually with one end thicker than the other, used as a weapon. Being a short and powerful weapon, it is used to strike or harm a person within reach.

-Like a sword- it is comparatively longer than the club and used similarly though lighter in weight and sharper at the edges. The sword hurts those near and seen.

-Like a sharp arrow: this is shot from a bow and can harm a person so far from us. Modern technology and media have made destroying people far from us with tongue easier and faster.

2. Insults & Curses: Words are very powerful and may leave a negative spiritual, psychological and emotional effect on those they are directed towards if spoken carelessly. Negative words can make others lose their self worth and confidence.

Beloved, since the careless usage of the tongue has negative implications to the bearer and his/ her hearers, let us watch our ways and keep our tongue from sin. The Holy Spirit will aid you by His mighty power. Begin to pray now!

May the grace of God that has appeared to all men, teaching us to say “no” to ungodliness, be your portion now and forevermore. Click: https://youtu.be/JmFUErUxsXc
