The Cost of Being A Disciple!

Today’s Devotion
Topic: The Cost of Being A Disciple! (Self Assessment)

It is a beautiful Saturday morning and we want delve straight into our weekend bible study. Kindly meditate on the scripture below and share the revelations you receive with us. We learn a great deal from you.

Text: Luke 14: 25- 30, 33

25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.

27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. 28 “ Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?

29 For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, 30 saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish. 33 In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. Amen

Background:
A large crowd followed Jesus everywhere He went. Instead of feeling proud of Himself as being the best “crowd-puller” (like some of our ministers do), He rather cautioned them that the decision to walk with Him was going to cost them!

Questions:
i. Why was it necessary that Jesus told them about the cost of being His disciples right from the onset?

ii. What was Jesus implying when he said, if anyone comes to me and does not hate father, mother, children and even life itself, they can not be my disciple?

iii. What is the “cross” of a believer? What does it mean to carry one’s cross? (verse 27)

iv. Is it true that people must analyze the cost of every endeavour before they actually commit themselves to it? (Luke 14: 28-29). If so, kindly explain how that principle works and relates to our walk with the Lord?

v. Discipleship will cost every believer (verse 33). It requires our utmost attention on our Lord Jesus, to learn His ways and become like Him. Mention some of the habits we must forgo as we follow Christ.
