Temple Tax

Today’s Devotion
Topic: Temple Tax
Passage: Matthew 17: 24- 27

INTRODUCTION: Today, we begin an interesting series dubbed “Temple Tax”. Although the entire passage above (ie Mat 17: 24- 27) centers around temple taxes demanded from worshipers in Jesus’s time, we will pick three thematic areas and study their application to our lives; especially with regards to the tax or money contribution obligation we have towards the state, church, trade unions, associations and society as a whole.

Day 1: Jesus Paid His Taxes!

Text: Matthew 17: 24- 25a

24 After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, “Doesn’t your teacher pay the temple tax?”25 “Yes, He does”. Amen

In every country, there are tax evaders. Some have been arrested and prosecuted, others are still enjoying huge profits because they evade taxes.

It is even possible that most of these state offenders are born again, tongues- speaking, Holy Ghost filled believers. To them, “Swerving” taxes or refusing to pay their contributions as society requires of them, is the smartest way to maximize profit and wealth.

They must make, hoard and conserve money by all means; either by fair or foul means. Once they have money, honour and power remain inevitable. Society, or even the church, accord them all the respect and privileges of royalty.

You’d agree that most tax “swervers” employ subtle means that even the state revenue collection agencies fail to detect. Goods are either smuggled in or rebranded. Corrupt officials may also be bribed to conceal the truth. JESUS HOWEVER LOOKS ON AT ALL THIS AND IS SADLY DISAPPOINTED IN US.

You see, “Jobless” as we will conclude Jesus was, He still paid His taxes without fail!

Suspecting that Jesus, being critical of the ills of His society at that time, will evade tax as the religious people did, revenue collectors approached Peter and inquired if Jesus paid taxes. Peter confidently replied “YES HE DOES”!

Child of God, those who want to be like Christ must learn to put to death the old, corrupt self and put on the character of Christ. He was not just a godly man, He was a responsible citizen too. Be a man or woman of integrity; pay your taxes, dues, vows and pledges like our Master did. There’s a huge blessing in being faithful and honest to both God and man. Meditate seriously on this word.

Begin to pray now. Ask that the mind of Christ dwells richly in you. Also pray that you uphold righteousness even if the system is perverse. Pray with the hymn “I want a principle within, of watchful godly fear” or Cece Winans’s “A Heart Like Yours Is My Desire”.

Tomorrow we will discuss whether it’s worth paying taxes or dues to the state or association even if the system is perverse.
