Still, Honor God As Holy! (Part 1)

Today’s Devotion
Topic: Still, Honor God As Holy! (Part 1)
Text: Numbers 20: 12

12 But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them”. Amen

We all know that Moses couldn’t make it to the promise land. We want to explore the circumstances that led to that in a three- day series, and see what lessons we may draw from it.

In the first month of the year, the whole Israelite community arrived at the Desert of Zin, and they stayed at Kadesh. Now there was no water for the community, and the people gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron.

They quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we had died with our brothers who fell dead along the way! “Why did you bring the us into this wilderness, that we and our livestock should die here? Why did you bring us out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates. And there is no water to drink!”

Now, Moses realising how powerless he was in providing a solution for God’s people, went from the assembly to the entrance to the tent of meeting with Aaron and fell facedown, and the glory of the Lord appeared to them.

The Lord said to Moses: “Take the staff, and you and your brother Aaron gather the assembly together. Speak to that rock before their eyes and it will pour out its water. So Moses took the staff from the Lord’s presence, just as he commanded him.

He and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock and Moses said to them, “Listen, you rebels, must we bring you water out of this rock?” Then Moses raised his arm and struck the rock twice with his staff. Water gushed out, and the community and their livestock drank.

You see, Moses had been an outstanding leader to a people who were difficult to lead. When they complained about water, Moses and Aaron did a great thing by seeking the face of God for solution. And God once again directed them on what to do.

But Moses had just had enough with these ungrateful people, instead of speaking to the rock as instructed by God, he struck it, twice. Yes, water gushed out all the same, but God was not pleased with him.

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron:
i. Because you did not trust in me enough.
ii. to honor me as holy
iii. in the sight of the Israelites,
iv. you will not bring this community into the land I give them.

Tomorrow and the day after, we shall explore the above statement Jehovah made in response to what Moses did and see if we can draw some lessons from it.

Meditate on this devotion and begin to pray. Pray for the patience required to honour God’s instructions to the latter, even when faced with opposition on every side.
