Obey your spiritual leaders in the Lord

Today’s Devotion

Topic: Obey your spiritual leaders in the Lord

Text: Hebrews 13: 17

Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit. AMEN

By virtue of our divine connections with some people, they have become our spiritual leaders. Who then is a spiritual leader? A spiritual leader is a person who has significant influence in your walk with Christ. He/she may be your pastor, a youth leader or some Christian brother or sister who you call a mentor.

Today’s message brings to bare the role of spiritual leaders in our lives. Spiritual leaders are like “watch-dogs”. It is their responsibility to lead us in every respect and watch over us so we can grow in the Lord. But they can successfully do this when we obey them.

Because of their responsibilities towards us, they may deploy various means including teaching, rebuking and instilling discipline. More often than not, we tend to be comfortable with the teaching, but not the rebuking. We always love to hear them praise us for our good works but anytime they rebuke us, we create a gap that hampers our relationship with them and which eventually leads us to fall.

The Bible is teaching us to obey our spiritual leaders because they will be held accountable for our every actions and inactions.

Just pause and meditate on the heavy investments other people have made in your lives towards you knowing Christ.
Now, begin to pray for your spiritual leaders. Ask God to give you a humble and obedient heart and the ability to appreciate all that they have done for you. Also, pray that God should give you the grace to invest in their peculiar ministries through prayer, financial support and others.

Finally pray that your spiritual leader continues to imitate Christ so that you are not misled. Apostle Paul said “And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.” ( 1 Corin 11:1). Christ remains our perfect example, pray that we all (both “mentees” and mentors) become just like Him.
