Nathanael Meets Jesus!

Today’s Devotion
Topic: Nathanael Meets Jesus! (Self Assessment)

We are grateful to the Almighty for another blessed Saturday. Kindly read the passage below meditatively and share with us the revelations the Holy Spirit gives in your times of reflections.

Text: John 1: 43 – 51

43 The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, He said to him, “Follow me.” 44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.“Come and see,” said Philip.

47 When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, He said of him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” 48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. Jesus answered, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.

”49 Then Nathanael declared, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the king of Israel.” 50 Jesus said, “You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You will see greater things than that.” 51 He then added, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” Amen

Questions:

  1. Jesus invited Philip to follow Him, but Philip went on to invite Nathanael too (Verse 43- 45), Why do you think it was a great thing Philip did? What can we learn from that?
  2. Kindly read Verse 46 again:
    a. What do you think about Nathanael’s response to Philip’s invitation?

b. Why do you think many are in the habit of hasty conclusions that are either based on public opinions or personal deductions, without giving a chance for people or situations to prove their own stance?

  1. Please read verse 47 again:
    a. What do you think about Jesus’ testimony about Nathanael?

b. Does this indicate Heaven has an opinion on each of us? If so, then what manner of persons ought we be?

c. From how Nathanael asked “How do you know me?” in verse 48, do you think, it is the case, that some people still do not realise our every move is bare before the Lord and that He knows all we do, thoroughly?

  1. Jesus replies Nathanael saying, “I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you.” What to you think is the assurance in here for all who go out to evangelize?
  2. What made Nathanael believe Jesus was the Messiah though He earlier doubted if anything good could come out from Nazareth? (Verse 49- 50). Do you think believers of today behave the same way? Explain
  3. What was the Lord Jesus implying when He said to Nathanael, “Very truly I tell you, you will see ‘heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”
  4. What can we learn from today’s discussion?
