Little Oil

Topic: Little Oil?
Text: 2 Kings 4: 2

”2 Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a little oil.” Amen

One day, the wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves”.

Prophet Elisha began wondering how best to help her. You see, apart from being poor, she also “appeared” very defenseless; one who really couldn’t help the situation at all.

Confused at the lack of options concerning the matter, prophet Elisha initially asked her, “How can I help you? However, it seemed the prophet remembered that, God could use anything to establish His purpose. He said to her, “tell me, what do you have in your house?” The widow replied; “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a little oil.” Guess what? That “little oil” was all the Lord needed.

Elisha then said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”

Beloved, please don’t be like this man in the company of the prophets who revered God but died in debt. Our reverence to God must unveil the several gifts in us to be used for His glory. It must teach us to be productive and resourceful not vice versa.

Do not also become like his widow, who felt completely helpless and said she had nothing at all except for a little oil. No situation is permanently damaged with God. He can use anything to turn things around in our favour. He was going to use the little oil of this widow to turn the life of her family around.

The oil represents the anointing, gift, skill, wealth, an opportunity, the education or talent that we have. No matter how small we consider them to be, we must look for empty vessels (people who do not even have the little we don’t value) and bless them. By being useful with our gifts and grace, we would be filling their emptiness with the special grace upon our lives. Before we realise, our own little begins to multiply and never runs out until we can find no one else to bless.

The only rule is, in emptying our “little oil” to bless other lives, we must be careful to “go inside the house and shut the door behind us” (thus, to do so privately so that others do not necessary see the sacrifices we making to change lives and offer us human praises).

In the end, that “little oil” God multiplies brings a lot of fulfilment in our lives and erases the shame of debt and the curse of servitude from our children’s heads too. Begin to pray now. Watch and be blessed: https://youtu.be/McUO9lh_yCs
