In The Hands Of The Potter

Today’s Devotion
Topic: In The Hands Of The Potter
Text: Jeremiah 18: 1- 6

1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 2 “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” 3 So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel. 4 But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.

5 Then the word of the Lord came to me. 6 He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.” Amen.

From today’s passage, we can observe that we are all in the hands of the Almighty God as clay is to the potter.

Every potter moulds his pots based on the vision or idea he has in mind for every particular vessel. He usually will not depend on observers or public opinion to know how his final work should be.

The reason is, observers may not see or have an idea of what he (the potter) wants to create from the clay that mar his hands. He is the only one who knows what design he has in mind for every vessel, and he does so patiently and with great skill and accuracy.

In the same vein, we Christians are in the hands of God who is moulding our lives into that perfect vessel He wants us to be. God doesn’t need opinions or comments from observers as to how our lives should be. He has the master design and is moulding us into that perfect vessel on a daily basis.

We can also observe that the potter does not throw away any clay as “useless”. He re-moulds the same clay into another vessel if he does not get the design he had in mind. We should know that God will take us through various experiences to shape our lives. The process may not always be pleasant, but we can be assured that the final vessel is a perfect design for His glory.

Sometimes, we may have fears or doubts about how our lives are going, but we should always have this assurance; much as we do not know what tomorrow holds for our lives, we have the One who holds tomorrow. And so long as we stay in His hands, He will mould our lives to reflect the glory He designed for us.

Begin to pray now. Ask for grace to remain in the Potter’s hand even when you don’t know how the end product will be like. He’s moulding you into a wonderful vessel of honour that will glorify His name. Your life will never be the same again!
