Don’t Get Passionate For Nothing! Text: Genesis 13: 6- 7

6 But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together. 7 And quarreling arose between Abram’s herdsmen and the herdsmen of Lot. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the land at that time. Amen

Today’s scriptural reference is a direct reflection of a very interesting social phenomenon. It’s really fascinating to see how individuals can be so passionate about a course (political party, football team, soap opera etc) to the extend of dying for it.

They risk our lives for the benefit of others. Some people are ready to die a highly avoidable death just so their leader or boss can reach his/ her goal and continue to live a happy life.

In pledging their allegiance, some threatened to commit suicide should their favourite soccer team lose an important match against their greatest football rivals. And guess what, when the team lost, they did! Others risked a jail sentence by lifting electoral ballot boxes  hoping that affects the overall outcome of the election in the favour of their candidate.

We sometimes forget that those we become enemies for, are friends to themselves. Abram and his nephew Lot were enjoying their wealth in peace while their herdsmen were busily fighting each other. The struggle for space between their herdsmen was expected since the two great men had increasing wealth. However, it was a matter of dialogue not quarrels.

Remember the men in question were very good relatives and didn’t bear each other a single drudge. But their herdsmen fought each other day after day.

Don’t die out of unnecessary passion so another to will live and enjoying life. Live peaceably with all men, as long as it depends on you. Why should we fight and create enmity between us when we can just dialogue for mutual benefit.

Don’t get passionate for nothing, some things are not worth fighting for. Pray for a discerning heart so you can live and die only for things eternal.
