Be Clearheaded!

Today’s Devotion
Topic: Be Clearheaded!
Text : 1 Thess 5: 6 – 8 (NLT)

6. So be on your guard, not asleep like the others. Stay alert and be clearheaded. 7 Night is the time when people sleep and drinkers get drunk. 8 But let us who live in the light be clearheaded, protected by the armor of faith and love, and wearing as our helmet the confidence of our salvation.
Amen

To remain or stay clearheaded is being able to think right and act intelligently. A place where a person’s thoughts are consistent with his actions and based on good morals or sound doctrine. In other words, having an alert mind devoid of confusion.

The church in Thessalonica had become an example to all believers in Greece; their faith was an inspiration to other believers. However, the city of Thessalonica, being recognized as a free city, allowed many pagan religions and cultural influences. These influences had left the young Christians torn between their christian faith and the enticing demands of pagan worship.

In addressing such challenges, Apostle Paul emphasized on the need for the church to stay focused and clearheaded and stick to the Good News they had heard and learnt from him. The Apostle continued that “night time” (or darkness) offered people the avenue to do whatever they pleased; from being idle to engaging in all sorts of unworthy acts. However we who are in the light are expected to to remain alert and clearheaded.

But why the need for all this? Firstly, because the light within us produces only what is good and right and true” (Ephesians 5:9). We can not fake it. Secondly, what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: ” I will live in them and walk among them. I will their God and they will be my people (2 Corin. 6:16).

You see, our world today offers so many avenues of darkness, causing many, including believers, to compromise on godly values in order to fit in. But is there any other freedom other than in Christ? Can we lay any other foundation other than the one we already have in Jesus?

Meditate on this word and begin to pray with the hymn “trust and obey”. Feed your mind with the word of God so that you can remain clearheaded even when the world entices you to fall. In His light, we will never miss our way. Just remain alert and clearheaded, that is all.
