Against Adultery And Fornication! (Self Assessment 143) PART 1

Today’s Devotion
Topic: Against Adultery And Fornication!
(Self Assessment 143)

PART 1

Background: Solomon one day decided to pen down his observation about some of our actions and inactions that easily lead to adultery. We want to discuss some of his observations into detail and apply them to our lives. We will also expand the discussion to include fornication, since the activities that may lead to either are almost same.

Kindly call the family together, it’s time to study the Word.

Text: Proverbs 7: 1- 12

My son, keep my words and store up my commands within you. 2 Keep my commands and you will live; guard my teachings as the apple of your eye. 3 Bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.

4 Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” and to insight, “You are my relative.”
5 They will keep you from the adulterous woman, from the wayward woman with her seductive words. 6 At the window of my house I looked down through the lattice.

7 I saw among the simple, I noticed among the young men, a youth who lacked judgement. 8 He was going down the street near her corner, walking along in the direction of her house 9 at twilight, as the day was fading, as the dark of night set in. 10 Then out came a woman to meet him, dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent. 11 (She is unruly and defiant, her feet never stay at home; 12 now in the street, now in the squares, at every corner she lurks.) Amen

Questions:
i. How will you explain adultery and fornication? Do you see anything wrong in their practice?

ii. Solomon mentions in verse 4 & 5 that wisdom and insight will keep one from adulterous and wayward women. Adulterous woman; we know, but who can you describe as a ‘wayward woman’?

iii. Solomon mentions in verse 7 that he saw among the simple, a young man who lacks judgement. Who, in your opinion, is a young man who lacks judgement?

iv. According to verse 8 & 9, this man who lacks judgment was going down the street, near the corner of the adultress or wayward woman. Walking along the direction of her house as the dark of the night sets in. How will you explain this; especially with regards to the activities of both married and unmarried men that lead to sexual sin?

v. In verse 10, we see that a woman comes out to meet him, dressed like a prostitute with crafty intent. What does it mean to say a lady ‘dressed like a prostitute with crafty intentions’? Can we relate it to our contemporary world today?

vi. Verses 11 & 12 fully describe the kind of woman this one is. What does it mean to say a woman:

a) Is unruly
b) Is defiant
c) Has feet that never stay at home; now in the street, now in the squares, at every corner she lurks?

vii. What have you learnt from today’s Bible study?

Kindly reply us through this same social media platform. We learn a lot from the answers you share.

Next week, we will continue with the concluding part. JUST TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED WHEN THEY MET AND THE CONSEQUENCES, IF ANY. You may kindly read ahead of the discussion: PROVERBS 7: 13- 27. God bless you.
