Today’s Devotion
Topic: Yoke Of Slavery
Text: Galatians 5: 1
1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Amen
Make no mistake about this; Jesus said it and it’s true, “… everyone who sins is a slave to sin”(John 8: 34b).
That was our state until mercy found us. The good we wanted to do, we couldn’t do but the evil we didn’t want to do was what we found ourselves doing all the time (Romans 7: 19).
Poor and wretched as we were, there seemed to be no hope of salvation until Jesus by His blood released us from the curse of sin and death into His marvellous light.
He broke the yoke of slavery and gave unlimited access to the liberty that can only be found in Him. Freedom from the dictates of our “adamic” sinful nature; freedom from those evil passions and lust that make us keep falling into temptations; freedom from the guilt of sin and the condemnations that come with it.
Apostle Paul therefore admonishes that, since it is for freedom that Christ has set us free, we ought to stand firm and not let ourselves back to the yoke of slavery. But will we heed this priceless advice? Well, not really; as Jesus already warned in John 3: 19 that even when light had come into the world, people still love darkness instead of light because their deeds are evil.
Do not be a lover of darkness like many have become, that one only lead to sin and the yoke of slavery that comes with it. Choose righteous and liberty. Repent from the life of sin and confess them to God for forgiveness. Decide to live the rest of life in honor of the King who has delivered you out of the darkness into His great light.
Why must you go back to being a slave to fornication, lust, arrogance, lies, pride, pornography, masturbation, pilfering, adultery, idolatary, drunkeness, coveteousness, bitterness, hatred and anger; when you can become part of a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation and God’s own special “person”?
One day as Peter slept in prison, “an angel of the Lord suddenly appeared and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him up. “Quick, get up!” he said, and the chains fell off Peter’s wrists (Act 12: 7).
A bright light has shone on you too wherever you are reading this devotion. The Lord Jesus is waking you up from the life of sin into the arena of liberty. “QUICK, GET UP! Your chains have fallen off and the Yoke of slavery is broken. Jesus does not condemn you at all, He actually means well whispering to you right now that you “Go and sin no more(John 8: 11).
