What Shall We Have

Today’s Devotion
Topic: What Shall We Have
(Self Assessment)

Background: There is an account in Matthew 19:16- 26 of a rich young man who went to Jesus and asked what “good” thing he must do to inherit eternal life. The Lord asks him to keep the commandments but the man asked the Lord, “which ones”?

According to verses 18- 20, Jesus mentioned but six of the commandments and the man said he had observed all those since he was a youth. Now he sort to know if He still lacked anything.

To this, Jesus said “if you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor and you will have treasures in heaven: COME, FOLLOW ME.”

At that response, the young man went away very sad because he had great possessions. Jesus then said, “… it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.” This left the disciples confused as to who then can be saved. Jesus replied that with God all things are possible.

Confused and unsure, Peter asked Jesus a very profound question that will be the basis of our discussion today. Please call the family together, it’s time to study the word of God.

Text: Mat 19: 27- 30 (NIV)
27 Peter answered Him, “We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?” 28 Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first. Amen

Questions:

  1. From the background, why do you think Jesus asked the young man to sell his possessions and come follow Him?
  2. Why did the man go away sad? What does that reveal about the state of his heart and the eternal life he ‘claimed’ to seek?
  3. When Jesus said it will be difficult for the rich to enter the kingdom of heaven, Peter asked, “we have left all and followed you, WHAT SHALL WE HAVE?” What do you think was Peter’s concern?
  4. Do you think Peter’s concern then, represents the concern of many believers today too, especially ministers?
  5. Read verse 28 again please. What did Jesus say is the first thing we will have for following Him? What does it mean?
  6. According to verse 29, what is the second blessing we attain for following the Lord? And what does this blessing actually mean?
  7. Jesus also said “but many who are first will be last, and the last first.” What is your understanding about this?
  8. What have you learnt from today’s bible study?
