Today’s Devotion
Topic: Watch Yourself!
Text: Luke 17: 1, 3a
1 Jesus said to His disciples: “Things that cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. 3 So watch yourselves …” Amen
Offences are bound to happen everyday, everywhere. For as long as humans remain interdependent on one another, someone may offend another. The question is, “why should it happen on your account?”.
Temptations and traps are also found wherever man is. Dangerous devices, schemes, strategies and plans are often set in secrecy to trap unsuspecting or “care-free” people and make them fall. But why should they happen on account of you?.
Why must it be you offending people and causing them to stumble? Why must satan find in you a huge “loop hole” to create mayhem? Why do you allow impatience, anger, strife and arrogance to take the better part of you when you profess Christ as your light and source?
One day, Jesus taught His disciples that it is possible to live a life free of satan’s manipulations, possession and influence. He said to them, “hereafter I will not talk much with you, for the prince of this world comes and has nothing in me. (Jh 14: 30). The “prince of this world” here refers to satan, and there was nothing in Christ that connected Him to satan. No hatred, bitterness, unforgiveness, malice, evil intentions, greed or pride.
Hardly will anyone indwelt by the Holy Spirit consciously become the vessel through which many other people stumble and fall. They work harder everyday to live by the Word of God. Should some careless attitude they put up appear to be a stumbling block to others, they quickly apologise and accept correction.
Therefore, check your life. Do you truly have the Holy Spirit bearing witness with your spirit that you are a child of God? Then why do you continue to do things that make others stumble and fall? Why are you leading the blind astray and teaching the innocent to sin? Why are you mistreating the vulnerable till they are used up and have no faith in God anymore? Why do you treat your surbodinates like they are “nothing”? Why do you take advantage of people’s weaknesses to exploit them?
Jesus didn’t lose words when He warned that the “things that will cause people to stumble are bound to come, but woe to anyone through whom they come. It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble. So watch yourselves.” (Jh 17: 1- 3a).
Meditate on this word and begin to pray. Reject the “old nature” that makes you cause other people to stumble, and plead for both the indwelling and infilling of the Holy Spirit. He will take over your life and minister through you unto others His righteousness, peace and joy.
So then, instead of being the stumbling block that causes people to fall, He will make you the stepping stone upon which others are lifted to be who God wants them to be.
People will fall, but don’t be the reason why! Watch yourself; where you go, what you do and what you say. GOD IS WATCHING!
