Topic: This Will Cost You! (PART 2)
Text: 1 Sam 27: 1-2
“Then David said in his heart, “Now I shall perish one day by the hand of Saul. There is nothing better for me than that I should escape to the land of the Philistines….. So David arose and went over, he and the six hundred men who were with him, to Achish the son of Maoch, king of Gath.” Amen.
Yesterday we discussed how David made a huge compromise by pitching his camp in the land of the Philistines knowing very well they were the enemies of Israel. He had done this to escape the harassment of Saul, his king.
Let’s look critically in the 3 compromising decisions David took so that we willl be wary of such in our walk with the Lord.
i. He decided to pitch camps in the enemy’s territory for safety sake. Pitching camps with the enemy for the modern day Christian can represent the times where circumstances make us backslide back to the dictates of the world and sin. Although it seemed like David took the best decision under the circumstance he found himself, we must always remember that any kind of safety or comfort the enemy (world) provides is for temporal relief. It will not be long before they begin to demand more than we should give.
ii. He agreed to go to battle against his own people. Remember David was anointed to be king of Israel. How can he go to war against the people he’s anointed to rule just to prove his loyalty to Achish. Believers, who align themselves with the world and make compromises that are contrary to the faith, are often used by the enemy as weapons of confusion against fellow believers.
iii. He agreed to be a life time bodyguard of Achish king of Gath. What a demeaning position for the future king of Israel to accept. We are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood and God’s own special people. We should never look at our current situation and settle for the “less” that Satan offers us if we compromise.
Thank God even the other Philistine kings would not allow David to go to battle with them (1 Sam 29: 4- 10).
Beloved, when life proves more difficult than we can bear, let us be steadfast and remain in Christ! The world has nothing better to offer. It might initially provide some sort of comfort until it begins to make heavy demands on our souls.
Remember, “blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water… — whatever they do prosper.” (Psalm 1: 1-3) Begin to pray now.
