The Tongue: Usage And Effect (Part1)

Today’s Devotion
Topic: The Tongue: Usage And Effect (Part1)
Text: James 3: 6

The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. Amen.

The tongue is an essential organ of the body. Its major functions include tasting and aiding speech. Although the tongue was created for good purposes, its misuse can destroy a person and (or) his/ her relationship with others.

In this 2 day series, we shall examine today, how the misuse of the tongue can have negative consequences on the individual and continue tomorrow by looking at how it can badly affect others if not handled well.

EFFECT ON INDIVIDUAL

  1. Its Taste Function: The tongue as an organ of taste, helps the individual to know how sweet, bitter or sour a food or drink is. It appreciates and welcomes anything it tastes sweet and even desires for more irrespective of the health implications that it might have on the bearer.

There are instances where a person is allergic to particular foods or drinks but finds it difficult to resist because the tongue ‘loves’ its sweetness. The person ends up eating or drinking this food or drink till it attracts complications that could have been avoided.

Proverbs 25: 16 says: “if you find honey, eat just enough…too much of it and you will vomit”.

  1. Its Speech Function: The use of the tongue to help construct vowels and consonants into words that form sentences can also bring harm to the individual when used carelessly. Proverbs 18:16 says: “A fool’s lips bring him strife, and his mouth invites beatings”.

Indeed, many have received severe beatings and injuries because they could not handle their tongues. Many have incured the wrath and displeasure of people who matter in their lives while others had to face the law all for the misuse of the tongue.

Apostle James warns that the tongue can corrupt a whole person. Don’t be one of the many, watch what you eat and say. Begin to pray now, ask for grace to be wise in your cravings for food and to be prudent in speech.

Tomorrow we shall discuss how the careless usage of the tongue can negatively affect others.
