The Testimony of David

Today’s Devotion
Topic: The Testimony of David
Text: 2 Samuel 22 : 1

1 David sang to the Lord the words of this song when the Lord delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. Amen

Testimony and praise are ‘bed mates’. It’s almost impossible to testify of the goodness of the Lord and not voluntarily offer praise. Sharing with others what God has done, automatically reminds you of how terrible your circumstance was and even worse, how helpless your efforts were in trying to overcome.

So the day king David decided to testify, he just couldn’t help but praise first, saying: “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation. He is my stronghold, my refuge and my Saviour —  from violent people you save me.” (2 Sam 22: 2-3)

Now he begun to explain the reason for his praise, saying: “I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and have been saved from my enemies. The waves of death swirled about me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. “In my distress I called to the Lord; I called out to my God. From His temple He heard my voice; my cry came to His ears.” (2 Sam 22: 4-7)

“The earth trembled and quaked, the foundations of the heavens shook; they trembled because He was angry. Smoke rose from His nostrils; consuming fire came from His mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under His feet.” (2 Sam 22: 8- 10)

“Out of the brightness of His presence bolts of lightning blazed forth. He shot His arrows and scattered the enemy, with great bolts of lightning He routed them. He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support.” (2 Sam 22: 13,15, 17- 19)

Beloved, how many of us can identify with David’s testimony today? Who has been there before; where the enemy threw ‘missiles’ at you from every side, hoping that at least, the one should strike you down if you missed the other? Who has been there before; where all you could do was to cry out to God for help and mercy? Whose testimony will be similar to David’s; of how the Lord destroyed the works of the enemy and set them free to praise and to testify of His goodness?

Let them join David exclaim that, “The Lord lives! Praise be to our Rock! Exalted be our God, the Rock, our Saviour! He is the God who avenges us, who puts the nations under us, who sets us free from our enemies. You exalt us above our foes; from violent men you rescue us. Therefore we will praise you, Lord, among the nations; we will sing the praises of your name.” (2 Sam 22: 47- 50)

Each victory the Lord wins on our behalf fortifies the faith of those who will be grateful; until they are no longer afraid of the enemy’s next attack. They just know that our God is able. With His help, we advance against troops and raise our Ebenezer very high. Saying to the nations, “this is how far the Lord has brought us.” May this be your portion, praise and testimony any time evil rises against you, in Jesus name! You have a God, who never fails. See you at church!
