The Reflection Of The Heart

Today’s Devotion
Topic: The Reflection Of The Heart
Text: Proverbs 27: 19

As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart. Amen

Not very sure from which century mirrors became widely used as the device for viewing one’s reflection. However, long before the discovery and use of mirrors and other polished surfaces that reflected a person’s image upon close contact, nature had its way of helping the curious get an impression of their image. All they had to do was to peep into any still water that was clear, and there it was — the reflection of their face.

In that same vain, a person’s life is a reflection of their heart. Their desires, passions, choices, demands and lifestyle only reveal what is deep within the heart.

That is why it is impossible for anyone to sustain a false impression for a long time; his own heart will give him up one day when the situation calls for a display of the things stored up within the heart.

Here is the principle: “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Luke 6:45)

What have you stored up in your heart? What do you keep adding to it? Jeremiah 17: 10 reminds us that “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.” What you put in unconsciously, is already who you are and who you will remain.

Let us break it down this way; you remember that it is a good man who brings out good things stored up in his heart. Great! This simply means that, the person with good things in his heart must have already been a good person who desires to store good. Then he can take from the good within to do more good unto others to increase the capacity of the good stored up within him. Then the circle continues.

Practically, this is how it works: the moment a person receives Jesus as personal Saviour, an incorruptible seed of righteousness is planted. Making him desire the righteousness of God and the good of all men.

Before you know, every day’s Bible study, prayer and fasting, obedience, faith and fellowship with the Holy Spirit, transforms him into the image of Christ and makes him store up good things within His heart. From there he does what is good and stores up more good within.

As we end the month today, meditate on this and begin to pray. Your prayer should simply be: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting” (Psalm 139: 23- 24). Admit all the wrong things done that have stored evil within you and ask for forgiveness and cleansing.

When we do this with a determination to keep our hearts connected to that of Christ, His nature downloads into ours and the reflection of our lives becomes more beautiful each time we look into the water.
