Text: 2 Kings 4: 42- 44

42 A man came from Baal Shalishah, bringing the man of God twenty loaves of barley bread baked from the first ripe grain, along with some heads of new grain. “Give it to the people to eat,” Elisha said. 43 “How can I set this before a hundred men?” his servant asked. But Elisha answered, “Give it to the people to eat. For this is what the Lord says: ‘They will eat and have some left over.’” 44 Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the Lord. Amen

A man decided to bless prophet Elisha with the little he had; only twenty loaves of bread. The man of God had over a hundred people to feed. So he commanded his servant to serve them with the limited bread but that didn’t make logical sense to the servant till the prophet revealed what the word of God was. A few lessons to be derived from this word.

First of all, the man who brought the gift just decided to bless the man of God from the proceeds of the first ripe grain of his harvest. He had no idea that the man of God had a huge responsibility and that that gift was most needed for God to work out a miracle.

Beloved, most of us are very mean to the servants of God who feed us spiritually and intercede on our behalf. For unexplained reasons, we choose to see all men of God as being either fraudsters or lazy people who do not want to work and earn.

Now, this is actually very sad because of the many genuine ones among them who labour day and night for the nourishment of our souls. They have responsibilities that may not even be personal or selfish and if you happened to be spiritually discerning, you will notice that that single act of obedience to bless them is soon to become an opportunity for God to bless many more people that you do not know.

Secondly, Elisha the man of God was not a selfish person at all. His calling was genuine and his heart was pure. When he received the gift, he was careful to inquire of the Lord what it was meant for. That is how he was able to discern what the word of the Lord was regarding the gift. Many men of God in our time have become so self-seeking and materialistic.

They would rather lavish themselves with the provisions of God than feed the many needy people around them whose number literally outweighs the available provision. No wonder those who are blessed with a harvest are growing increasingly reluctant to bless these servants of God, even the selfless and genuine ones too.

Finally, God has promised and it will always be true. He will bless all who bless us and then make ‘us (ourselves)’ a blessing too. See how twenty loaves of bread became a blessing to a hundred, and it all begun with one man’s generosity and another man’s selflessness.

God is always in the miracle working business, but He requires our availability, obedience and selflessness to demonstrate His Power even to the most faithless among us. Remember the little boy in John 6: 9 who gave his five loaves and two fishes?

Please be a blessing today to any genuine man of God who sows into your life and also to any needy person around you. And to all those who happen to receive a blessing either directly from God or from the people He touches to help you, do not hesitate to share with the many who also really require that blessing to live.

They may not be able to pay you back directly, but as they bless God for your life, the Lord will bless you again for blessing them and the cycle of blessings will just continue.
