Topic: Let Wisdom Speak, Not Age!
Text: Job 32: 8- 9
8 But it is the spirit in a person, the breath of the Almighty, that gives them understanding. 9 It is not only the old who are wise, not only the aged who understand what is right. Amen
Elihu was the youngest among Job’s friends who had come to console him during his crisis. In those days knowledge was limited, all misfortunes were linked to sin and seen as a punishment from God. And so three of Job’s friends (Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar), insisted that Job was suffering because he had sinned, yet Job defended his integrity and rather blamed God for his predicament.
Elihu, son of Barakel became very angry with Job for justifying himself instead of God. He was also angry with Job’s three older friends, because they had found no way to refute Job, and yet had condemned him.
He “waited before speaking to Job because they were older than he was. But when he saw that the three men had nothing more to say, his anger was aroused”(Job 32 : 4-5). So Elihu said: “I am young in years, and you are old; that is why I was fearful, not daring to tell you what I know. I thought, ‘Age should speak; advanced years should teach wisdom.’ But it is the spirit in a person, the breath of the Almighty, that gives them understanding” (Job 32: 6- 8).
Beloved, what Elihu shares with us this morning is true. Wisdom is generally associated with age because life has a way of imparting unto the aged the best ways of doing things. Often, it is either from the long years of walking with God and (or) the various experiences and exposures they encounter through life with time.
However, it is not only the old who are wise, not only the aged who understand what is right” (Job 32: 9). As a matter of fact, all who choose to FEAR GOD have automatically chosen the path of wisdom, regardless of age. For there is a spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty that gives them understanding.
Beloved, the earlier you are endowed with divine wisdom, the more bearable life and its uncertainties would be for you. Therefore desire wisdom today. Start by fearing God and obeying His word.
“Cherish wisdom, and it will exalt you; embrace it, and it will honour you. It will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a glorious crown” (Proverbs 4: 8 – 9). Begin to pray now!
