Today’s Devotion
Topic: Keep Your Heart!
Text: Proverbs 23: 19
Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path. Amen
The writer of this book draws our attention to what he was about to say by using the command ‘Listen’. This shows us how important the statement he wanted to make is.
Also, he draws the attention of the listeners to the reward they would receive for heeding to his words, even before making his statement. He tells that ONCE YOU LISTEN AND PRACTICE, YOU WILL BE WISE.
Now, the command: KEEP YOUR HEART ON THE RIGHT PATH. This immediately suggests there is, of a certainty, a wrong path and we are more susceptible to choose that path.
The heart of man is so small, but delicate and a “life determiner”. It controls and holds our lives. The heart is subject to both the Spirit and the Flesh. The way of the Spirit is right but that of the flesh leads to destruction.
The Bible admonishes us to guard our heart with all diligence, for out of it comes the issues of life. Once you keep your heart with all diligence (where your actions and thoughts please the Lord), you inevitably keep it on the right path.
If you leave your heart unguarded, the foolishness of this world will gradually creep in and push you towards the wrong path.
Why do you allow the worries and cares of this life to take hold of your heart and blindfold you from the promises of God? Why would you let the pleasures of this world sway you from the God you love? Why must you continually allow the ‘gentleman’ or ‘lady’ meddle with your heart, as though it was a playing field? Why would you want to gain the whole world and loose your soul?
Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your heart. Rather, offer your heart entirely to the Lord, ask Him to inhabit and take control. He can take better care of your heart than you or anyone else could.
He will make all grace abound for you and keep you in His righteousness and will. A place where you desire and love nothing except that which He desires and loves. Your fragile heart will be safer there.
Begin to pray right now as you reflect on the song “Lord I give you my heart, I give you my soul; I live for you alone. Every breath that I take, and every moment I’m awake, Lord have your way in me.”
