Background: For the past four weeks, we’ve been studying Jesus’ encounter with a Samaritan woman. Our study last week saw the Samaritan woman rush back to the town telling everybody of her encounter with Jesus with a wonder if He was not the Messiah.

Meanwhile, Jesus’ disciples had arrived from buying food from the town and also wondered why Jesus had engaged the woman in a conversation and what they talked about. However, none of them asked Jesus about it.

Beloved, let us delve deep into the word of God, once again to know what the townspeople will do with the woman’s testimony. And also what the disciples are going to say to Jesus now that they’ve brought the food.

Text: John 4: 31- 36

31 Meanwhile, His disciples urged Him, “Rabbi, eat something.” 32 But He said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.” 33 Then His disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought Him food?”

34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of Him who sent me and to finish His work.

35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.

36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. Amen

Questions

1) What does the Lord Jesus mean when He said: “My food is to do the will of Him who sent me”?

2. Still, from verse 34, we can easily deduce that according to Jesus, His food was not just to do the will of He who sent Him but also to finish it. Why is the finishing of our God-given assignments and purposes, as important as our starting out to do?

3) Jesus after witnessing to one woman, went ahead to acknowledge that in the natural it may be until four months before farmers can harvest. But even now, the disciples should “open their eyes and look at the fields. They are ripe for harvest.” What does the Lord seek to imply?

4. Jesus mentions in verse 36 that anyone who will take advantage of the ripe harvest and reap draws a wage for himself while harvesting a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. What does this mean with regards to our partnering God for soul winning?
