Topic: “If It Is Thus, Why Is This Happening To Me?”
Text: Gen 25: 22 (ESV)

22 The children struggled together within her, and she said, “If it is thus, why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord. Amen

Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah daughter of Bethuel, the Aramean from Paddan Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean. About nineteen years into their marriage, they remained childless.

Isaac therefore prayed to the LORD on behalf of his wife, because she was childless. The LORD answered his prayer, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.

However, the pregnancy had a lot of struggles. The two babies jostled each other within her, and she said, “Why is this happening to me?” “How is it that God decides to answer the prayers of my husband and allows me to conceive. Only for me to suffer from the very pregnancy that’s suppose to be a blessing?” She may have wondered. “If this pregnancy is thus from God, then why are all these happening?”

She therefore went on to inquire of the LORD. The LORD said to her, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you will be separated; one people will be stronger than the other, and the older will serve the younger.” That is why!

Dearly Beloved, just like Aunty Rebekah, many of us really wonder if what had earlier appeared as God’s answer to our petition is really from Him in the first place. Yes! We honestly get confused because sometimes, the complications surrounding them are too complex. Many many struggles to bear, many pains, many disappointments and sleepless nights they bring. The question is often simple, “if it is thus (as in from God), then why is this happening to me?”.

Brethren, we all know by now that God is not a man nor does He work as such. He is God. When we ask for a baby, He doesn’t just give us twins; HE GIVES NATIONS. It is often we, who are never prepared for the huge blessings He gives in response to our prayers. That is why the the preparatory and waiting period always OVERWHELMS US. He doesn’t give what we ask for, HE GIVES US EXCEEDINGLY AND ABUNDANTLY, ABOVE ALL WE CAN IMAGINE OR THINK.

So next time the blessings He promised you seem to overwhelm you, don’t despair. Rather inquire of the Lord like Rebekah did, and He will show you what you do not know so that you can appreciate Him more, for all HE DOES FOR YOU. Begin to pray now. Ask for a deeper walk with Him so that blessings that come diguised do not overwhelm you to despair. He just wants the best of everything for you.
