Today’s Devotion
Topic: Having the Attitude of Christ (Self Assessment)
Background: The Christian’s life is never lived in isolation. Every thought, word and action goes a long way to affect others; either positively or negatively. As Christians, our prime example is Jesus Christ – the Author and Finisher of our faith. Let us examine how he lived on earth. The lessons presented in today’s passage are the very things that distinguished Christ’s life – in attitude, word and deed – from all others.
Text: Philippians 2: 3- 11
3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death–even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Amen
Questions:
1) What does it mean to consider others better than one’s self? (verse 3)
2) In what ways do you think that Jesus looked not only to His own interests, but to the interests of others? (verse 4). In what ways can we do same, as His followers?
3) In one sentence, describe the attitude of Christ. Why does Paul entreat us to have this same attitude or mind of Christ? (verses 5 – 8)
4) What is the highest form of obedience and humility that one can attain? Do you think that Christians of today are willing to go that far in our walk with the Lord? (verse 8)
5) Everything Christ did was as a result of the attitude or mind He had. What was His reward? What rewards do you think that Christians of today also stand to gain, if we adopt the attitude or mind of Christ? (verses 9 – 11)
