Today’s Devotion
Topic: Greatness As Described by God
(Self Assessment)
Background: It is another blessed saturday morning and we bless God for His kindness so far. We know His mercies will carry us the many years ahead of us too, in Jesus name. Beloved, kindly read the text below prayerfully. Don’t hesitate to share the deep revelations you receive from the Holy Spirit with us.
Today, we seek to understand greatness from a divine perspective. And also to ascertain if it is measured only in material and financial terms as our world indirectly projects. Can one who has no material success to show, still be considered as great? Ponder over these as we read the text.
Text: Matthew 11: 7-9, 11,13-15
7 As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wildernessto see? A reed swayed by the wind? 8 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces.
9 Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet.
11 Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
13 For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. 14 And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come. 15 Whoever has ears, let them hear. Amen.
Questions
- Jesus said of all the people born of woman there has not risen any greater than John the Baptist. What do you understand by that?
- What do you think makes John a great man?
- Mark 1: 6-7 describes John as one who “…wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey”. How could he have been a great man if he didn’t live in a palace, ride the best horse, wear best clothes or even eat the best meals? Kindly explain.
- The greatness of Jesus Christ and John the Baptist as we see in the scriptures contradicts our definition of greatness today. What lessons can be learnt from this ?
