Today’s Devotion.
Topic : DRESS CODE.
Text : Luke 12: 35- 36
“Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning. like servants waiting for their Master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when He comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for Him” Amen
The kind of apparel we put on conveys a huge message to the public. The DRESS CODE for believers is RIGHTEOUSNESS, expressed through decent and appropriate dressing.
Decent, is where we put on garments that are neither offensive nor provocative. Appropriate is when we put on the required and expected apparel to suite and represent what we do. When a banker puts on sports wear to work on Monday, he will surely receive a query from the branch manager. Although he maybe decently dressed, the attire remains inappropriate for his work.
Why are we always arguing over what is appropriate and decent for believers to wear, it’s hypocritical of us. Every company or organization encourages decent and appropriate dressing, especially, while you are within its premises. It is rare to see improper dressing at organised places. Christianity is a higher calling, a call to be like Jesus. It demands of us both decent and appropriate dressing everyday while we keep the fire burning.
Proverbs 7:10 and 12 say; “Then out came a woman to meet him, dressed like a prostitute and with crafty intent. Now in the street, now in the squares, at every corner she lurks”. This question then arises, if she is not a prostitute, why is she dressed like one? What will be the intent for doing so unless to attract what prostitutes attract and probably do what they do.
She may argue that the weather is hot so these exposing clothes are to prevent her body from burning with all the heat, but what she can’t argue about is the fact that going to meet a man, and dressed like a prostitute connotes crafty intentions.
Beloved, the word of God is always true. Twist it, turn it and it remains the same. Paul says, “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, CLOTHE yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience” (Colossians 3: 12). When we spiritually have these virtues on, it will definitely inform the physical clothes we wear.
It was unbelievable to hear you say the other day that God is interested in the heart not the outward. That might be a different god then. The Almighty God we serve, cares about everything within and without. He cares about the way we represent Him as His ambassadors on earth. He cares about the way we bring disrepute to His name anytime society criticises us for bearing His name and living like the world.
He cares when the “light” we are to shine before men is not bringing glory to the Father, He cares about that unbeliever we failed to win, who might lust unto sin tonight because of what you wore today. He cares that you don’t care about Him this way!
Meditate on the above child of God. Paul warns that you argue to have the right to do anything—but not everything is beneficial and constructive (1 Corinthians 10: 23).
Begin to pray now. Ask for strength to LIVE by the WORD no matter what society imposes as right. We must glorify God with what we wear! Being fashionable must not be synonymous to indecent or inappropriate dressing. Click: https://youtu.be/1JwVmrLkhcw
