Topic: Don’t Settle For The Permissible Will Of God: Leave Zoar, Head For The Mountains!
Text: Genesis 19: 30
30 Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave. Amen
When the angels who will destroy Sodom and Gormorrah told Lot to escape the city at dawn because it was marked for destruction, the latter hesitated. So the angels (in human form) grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.
As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”
But Lot said to them, “No, my lords, please! Your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have shown great kindness to me in sparing my life. But I CAN’T flee to the mountains; this disaster will overtake me, and I’ll die. Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn’t it? Then my life will be spared.”
He said to him, “Very well, I will grant this request too; I will not overthrow the town you speak of. But flee there quickly, because I cannot do anything until you reach it.” (That is why the town was called Zoar)
23 By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. 24 Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. 25 Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. (Gen 19: 15- 26).
After sometime “Lot and his two daughters left Zoar and settled in the mountains, for he was afraid to stay in Zoar. He and his two daughters lived in a cave” (Gen 19:30). The question is, “why was Lot afraid to settle in Zoar?”. It’s because He knows very well that that is not the destination God instructed Him.
Many at times when we hear the word of God, we align it with what sounds like reality to us and beg God to change the strategy from what is his PERFECT WILL to his PERMISSIBLE WILL. However, as in the case of Lot, all who go for the permissible will (Zoar) instead of the perfect will of God (Mountains), never know absolute peace until the have come back to God’s orginal plan for their lives.
Beloved, you are blessed to hear the voice of God distinctively and clearly. He says “flee to save your life from the accursed life of ‘sin’, don’t look back and don’t stop anywhere in the plain. FLEE TO THE MOUTAIN OR YOU WILL BE SWEPT AWAY”. DON’T LET FEAR CAUSE YOU TO BEG FOR ZOAR, THAT IS NOT GOD’S PERFECT WILL FOR YOU.
Begin to pray now. Repent from consistently renegotiating with God concerning His word for your life. Ask for strength to obey His instructions to the latter, for in that you will find peace and security. He knows best. He is not just delivering you from the destruction coming upon Sodom (or the world of sin), He also wants you at the top. To take you higher in all that you do and place your feet on solid rock. You belong to the mountains high, DON’T STOP IN THE PLAIN OR YOU WILL BE SWEPT AWAY. DON’T SETTLE FOR ZOAR EITHER.
Climb higher everyday in your academics, life, career and ministry till you reach the destination God has assigned for you. Every other stop will not be the perfect will of God for your life. Go higher!
