Topic: Christian By Fate Or By Decision?
Text: 1 Samuel 2: 18
But Samuel, though he was only a boy, served the Lord. He wore a linen garment like that of a priest. Amen
There comes a time in a believer’s life when he comes to terms with himself concerning his life, faith and aspirations.
As we already know, Samuel didn’t have much say about how his life was going to be. Even before he was born, his mother had offered him to God for service in the house of the Lord.
This was at the time when Eli’s two sons were busily “misappropriating” almost everything in the house of God. But Samuel, though he was only a boy, chose to serve the Lord through thick and thin. He even wore a linen garment like that of a priest.
Beloved, many of us were born into church and have always thought to know the Lord by virtue of the active role our family members play in the church. But that should not be the case.
You can see from our text above that although Hannah, Samuel’s mother, completely vowed him for the Lord’s use, Samuel grew to personally accept the walk with God as a privilege. He made a decision to serve God, even as a little boy. He even chose a garment very similar to that of the priest.
What about you beloved? Do you profess Christ because you were born into the faith, or like Samuel, you have come to accept the faith as yours; serving the Lord and humanity in every capacity possible, as well as putting on the priestly garment of righteousness, prayer, fasting and meditation?
Ponder over this and begin to pray. Ask the Lord to draw you nearer to Himself this year. If even Samuel who was a little boy could make the best decision to serve the Lord the rest of his life, then what are we waiting for?
This year presents us with another opportunity to have a closer walk with Jesus. Do not let it slip by unnoticed. Neither should you be like Eli’s sons who were born into the Judaism; grew and lived in the faith, but never made a conscious effort to learn of God and put to practice. No wonder the wrath of God came on them for all the despicable things they were doing in the house of God.
The choice is yours therefore. Samuel, though he was only a boy, chose to serve the Lord. He was not ashamed of his faith; forfeiting all other possible lifestyles so that his life would please God. What about you beloved, you who are more matured and full of wisdom, what will be your choice this new year and beyond?
