As Examples For Us

Topic: As Examples For Us

Text: 1 Corin. 10: 11
These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age. Amen
In every field of endeavor, experience is a valuable advantage. For those who might not have had first hand exposure to the amount of experience needed to handle certain tasks, learning from other people’s experience can be very helpful.
Someone once described the Bible as a large history book with a lot of stories, among other things. Rightly so, the Bible has scores and scores of records of events that took place in the lives of people and nations at particular times in history. One would ask why so much pain was taking to put these events down.
Today’s scripture tells us why. Apostle Paul writes to the church in Corinth, saying, “I don’t want you to forget, dear brothers and sisters, about our ancestors in the wilderness long ago. All of them were guided by a cloud that moved ahead of them, and all of them walked through the sea on dry ground. Yet God was not pleased with most of them, and their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
“These things happened as a warning to us, so that we would not crave evil things as they did, or worship idols as some of them did. As the Scriptures say, “The people celebrated with feasting and drinking, and they indulged in pagan revelry.” And we must not engage in sexual immorality as some of them did, causing 23,000 of them to die in one day.
“Nor should we put Christ to the test, as some of them did and then died from snakebites. And don’t grumble as some of them did, and then were destroyed by the angel of death. These things happened to them as examples for us. They were written down to warn us who live at the end of the age. If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.” (1Corin. 10: 1, 5-12)
Beloved, what examples are you learning from? It is very important to take time each day to study God’s Word because it has wisdom for every aspect of your life. After all, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip His people to do every good work.” (2 Tim. 3:16- 17)
As we begin a new working week today, you too begin to pray. Ask God to give you the hunger and thirst to study His Word. Ask Him to open your eyes to its truths so that you can benefit from all that has been written therein to serve as examples for your life.
They have failed those who live by their own understanding but that is not you. For your own life can never fail; no it can’t, not when you have the word of God as your guide and prized possession.
