Topic: A Significant Day
Text: Luke 2: 11
The Saviour — yes, the Messiah, the Lord — has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! Amen
Different days have varied significance to different people for several different reasons. Some days hold pleasant memories while others remind us of sour experiences. But no matter what a particular day of significance stands for, it marks an event that has shaped our lives in one way or another; either positively or negatively.
Several thousands of years ago, a spectacular event that changed the course of history took place. While visiting Bethlehem for census, the time came for Mary’s baby to be born. She gave birth to her first child, a son. That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep.
Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Saviour—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.”
Suddenly, the angel was joined by a vast host of others—the armies of heaven—praising God and saying, “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.” …Hurrying to Bethlehem to see for themselves, they narrated how they had learnt of the Saviour’s birth. All who heard the shepherds’ story were astonished, but Mary kept all these things in her heart and thought about them often. (vv 6-19)
The Armies of Heaven couldn’t help but announce the birth of the Son of God who was to take away the sins of this world. The people of old had looked forward to the promised Messiah, and the angels of God were excited to report His birth first to Shepherds. To this day, we mark this significant day in remembrance of the redemption that the Almighty God brought to His children on earth.
Beloved, as you mark this day, kindly take some time to ponder over who Jesus is to you. Remember that He is the SOLE REASON for the Season. After seeing the Child, the Shepherds returned to their flocks, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. After the festivities that characterize this season, may you remain in faith with God; glorifying and praising Him for the Gift of His Son Jesus Christ. Have a merry Christmas.
