Topic: A Passionate Prophet Vrs His Evil King (Part 17)
(Self Assessment 217)
Background: Welcome back to our series on Elijah and Ahab. Last week we had to make way for our Holy Saturday message. We will continue from where we left off now.
You may recall that Elijah fell asleep from exhaustion and the angel of the Lord woke him up twice to eat because the journey was long.
Given the strength of the food, the prophet travelled for forty days and night till he took rest in a cave on Mount Horeb.
There the Lord asked what He was doing there and he complained that Israel has rejected the Lord’s covenant, torn down His altars and put to death all His prophets except he (Elijah). And now they are trying to kill him too.
What would the Lord say to these things? How is Elijah going to survive alone on this mountain if his claims are true that his life is in danger?
For answers to these and more, let’s zoom straight into our weekly bible study.
Text: 1 Kings 19: 11- 14
11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.
12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
14 He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.” Amen
Questions:
1. After Elijah’s earlier complain the Lord asked Him to come out and stand on the mountain for He was going to pass by. A powerful wind blew, earthquake came, fire and the Lord was not in them, but for a gentle whisper. In your opinion, what was Lord trying to teach Elijah?
2. The voice of the Lord asked Elijah the same question as before, “WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE, ELIJAH?”. What does this question connote please?
3. In verse 14, Elijah goes on to give the same answer as he gave earlier. How does this prove the prophet was resolute about his conviction and position?
4. What have you learnt from today’s discussion?
