Text: Joshua 10: 1-15
This is a blessed Saturday the Lord has given us. Kindly read the passage below and share your thoughts with us.
Background: Adoni-Zedek, king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and had become their allies. He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters.
So Adoni-Zedek, king of Jerusalem appealed to five neighbour kings to join forces with Israel. “Come up and help me attack Gibeon,” he said, “because it has made peace with Joshua and the Israelites.” So they joined forces.
Text: Joshua 10: 6-10b
6 The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: “Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us.” 7 So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army, including all the best fighting men.
8 The Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you.” 9 After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. 10b Joshua and the Israelites defeated them completely at Gibeon. Amen
Questions
1) The Gibeonites had become a target for Adoni Zedek not because they had sinned, but because they had become allies with Joshua and his men. What does this reveal about spiritual warfare?
2) Adoni Zedek was alarmed because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters. Does this mean that the devil sees our full potential as children of God? Do we often see ourselves as he does?
3) Adoni Zedek joined forces with five other kings against Gibeon. What does this reveal about our enemy’s battle strategy?
4) The Gibeonites were quick to inform Joshua about the plot; they did not waste time complaining or worrying. What should be our first and best move in fighting the devil?
5) What word of assurance can you deduce from God’s speech in verse 8?
6) What have you learnt from today’s study?
