Topic: Confusion In The Church
Text: John 17: 22- 23a
22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Amen
Confusion had “entered” the camp of Israel. A battle for power and position. A quest to know who was holier than the other, much closer to God than the other and most powerful too. A misunderstanding about who had the mandate to lead and whose it was to follow.
Korah and certain Reubenites—Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and one son of Peleth— had became insolent. With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council. They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, “YOU HAVE GONE TOO FAR!” The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?” (Numbers 16: 1-3)
“When Moses heard this, he fell facedown. Then he said to Korah and all his followers: “In the morning the Lord will show who belongs to Him and who is holy, and He will have that person come near him. The man He chooses He will cause to come near Him. You, Korah, and all your followers are to do this: Take censers and tomorrow put burning coals and incense in them before the Lord. The man the Lord chooses will be the one who is holy. YOU LEVITES HAVE GONE TOO FAR!” (Numbers 16: 4-7)
Korah and his followers maintain that Moses and Aaron have gone so far. To them, these two brothers are not the only sanctified people in the camp, they all are. How can they set themselves above the Lord’s Assembly? Moses was very discouraged by their accusations. He also thinks Korah and his team have gone too far.
But Beloved, where was Korah when God called Moses at Mount Horeb and commissioned him to deliver the Israelites from Egypt? Had the Lord not by passed him to reveal the law for His people through Moses? Why can’t Korah accept his role as member of the council and serve with all his heart? What came over him to confuse others and oppose the leadership of Moses? With what measuring instrument could he tell that Moses was not the only holy one at the camp, but everyone was? What is Korah’s interest in all this? Ponder over these questions meditatively.
Do you now see that the power struggle going on in your family, church, fellowship, office and association is not peculiar? Somebody rises to undermine the leadership of another for reasons that are dubious and selfish. Yet, he/ she gets the backing of others as perverse as them and cause mayhem rather peaceful co-existence.
Until God intervenes and makes the distinction clear, the devil feasts on our disagreements and knocks our heads together against each other. Think about the damage all these misunderstandings in the church in particular do to the body of Christ.
