Topic: Pursue, Overtake And Recover (Part 1)

BACKGROUND: There is so much we can learn for David’s engagements with the Philistines and the consequences thereof. So for this and the next Saturday, we will be exploring deeper into 1 Samuel 30. You will be blessed.
Text: 1 Samuel 30: 3-6, 8
3 When David and his men reached Ziklag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. 4 So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep. 5 David’s two wives had been captured—Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel.
6 David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God. 8 and David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I pursue this raiding party? Will I overtake them?” “Pursue them,” he answered. “You will certainly overtake them and succeed in the rescue. Amen
Questions:
i. As David and his 600
men were preparing to go to war with the Philistines against his own people (Israel), another enemy (Amalekite) came behind them and captured their wives and children. What are some of the challenges believers face when we lose our focus and identity in Christ and align ourselves with wrong people who have a wrong direction?
ii. According to verse 4, David and his 600 warriors wept till they had no strength to weep. Is it true then that certain storms and tribulations can bring even mighty men to their knees? If so, why then do we build our confidence in men instead of God? Why is it easier to rely on ourselves and not the ALMIGHTY GOD?
iii. David’s men were so bitter that they wanted to stone him but verse 8 says, David encouraged himself in the Lord. What does it mean to ” encourage oneself in the Lord”? How can a believer practically encourage himself/herself when he/ she is totally discouraged and has no strength to even weep?
iv. “Shall I pursue this raiding party” Will I overtake them? David inquired of the Lord. Do you think it was important for David to inquire from God before taking any action in verse 8? Explain your answer.
