Topic: What Are You Doing Here?
Text: 1 Kings 19: 13
13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” Amen
Elijah had had enough, now he chose to go his own path. As a servant of God, he had always stood for the will of God till now. Just days ago, he single-handedly challenged the prophets of baal and succeeded in drawing the attention of Israel back to God.
However, for killing the prophets of baal, Jezebel has vowed to kill him too. So he runs and hides in a cave. But guess what, God shows up at the mouth of the cave and asks, “what are you doing here, Elijah?” Can you imagine that?
The questions of Jehovah are often too deep. How can a mortal answer Him? You remember how He questioned Adam and Eve too? He is omniscient, how come He asks us what He already knows? Are His questions rhetorical then? Anyway, let’s go on.
Elijah replied Him and said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left and now they are trying to kill me too.” (1 Kings 19: 14)
Then The Lord said to him, “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah TO SUCCEED YOU as prophet.
Jehu will put to death any who escapes the sword of Hazael, and Elisha will put to death any who escapes the sword of Jehu. Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel — all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal and whose mouths have not kissed him.” (1 Kings 19: 15- 18)
Wow! Beloved, now you see it. The moment Elijah run from the Will of God and desired to end it all in death because he was tired of being the only prophet serving faithfully, God told him to go and anoint ELISHA to succeed him. THAT WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE END FOR ELIJAH’S MINISTRY.
Why? Because the Omniscient God had a plan all along. It seemed Elijah was the only faithful prophet but it was not so. GOD in His wisdom had reserved 7,000 more who wouldn’t bow to the devil. He had also been preparing Hazael, Jehu and Elisha to put up a stronger force than Elijah did against Jezebel and her witchcraft. HE IS GOD AND WE SHOULDN’T FEEL WISER THAN HIM. HE KNOWS WHAT HE DOES!
Beloved, don’t give up on the work of God because you feel everyone else left it for you to carry. NO ONE MORTAL CAN CARRY THE MISSION OF GOD ALONE! Different people are doing different things to support what you are doing; except you wouldn’t know.
Stop running from your calling or you risk the opportunity to fulfill your destiny. God can easily raise another to take your place. SO RISE UP THIS MORNING, GET OUT FROM THIS CAVE IN WHICH YOU ARE HIDING, GO BACK THE WAY YOU CAME AND SERVE THE LORD BETTER THAN YOU EVER DID.
This is to you a second chance. Do your best to honor God in all things and don’t run from His plan for your life. Remember, those who delight themselves in Him receive the desires of their heart.
