Topic: We Need The Holy Spirit!
Text: 1 Samuel 16:13 (NLT)
13 So David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah. Amen
The story of David continues with God rejecting all of Jesse’s seven sons, until David is brought in. Right before his father and brothers, David is anointed by Samuel as king of Israel. Immediately, the Holy Spirit came powerfully upon him. Without the anointing of the Spirit of the Lord, it was going to be impossible for David to walk with Jehovah and do that which pleases HIM.
The Holy Spirit manifests God’s power in our lives. In the very beginning, when the earth was without form and darkness was over the surface of the deep, the Spirit of God moved over the earth. This showed that, before time begun, the Holy Spirit is. When the Word was spoken by God during creation, it was HE (The Holy Spirit) who brought the Word into being. HE IS THE POWER OF GOD IN ACTION.
So for David to be a man after God’s own heart, the Holy Spirit needed to first dwell in him and cause his heart to revere God, while his thoughts aligned with the mind of God.
Practically, it was the Holy Spirit that gave him (David) the courage to face Goliath, the humility to serve under Saul inspite of all the opposition, the strength to conquer in all battles and the remorse that led to repentance each time he offended God.
The Holy Spirit taught him to wait, endure, press on and not give up even when his life seemed to have moved in a direction contrary to what we expect to be the life of a “king- to- be”.
The Spirit of God gave David unprecedented understanding into divinity. He inspired the king to write several psalms that tell who God is and our need of Him in all we do.
The Holy Spirit is the One that worked miracles through our fathers of the faith and accomplished great wonders in their life time. He taught them how to live in this sinful world and still please the Lord. (read: Luke 1: 15 & 41, Luke 4: 1, Acts 6: 3, Acts 11: 24, Acts 9: 17, Acts 13: 9, Acts 13: 52, Exodus 31: 1- 3, Exodus 35: 31, Micah 3: 8).
He is truth to all who seek, righteousness to all who believe in Jesus, teacher of the living word, joy to the sorrowful, strength to the weak, riches to the poor, companion to the lonely, healer to the sick, comforter to the grieving, direction to the lost, salvation to the sinner, wisdom to the fool, father to the fatherless and peace to the troubled.
Do you now see how much we need the Holy Spirit to bring the difference we desire? He is more than a companion to those who know Him. Jesus (Himself) encouraged us in John 16: 7. He said, “But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him (the Holy Spirit) to you [to be in close fellowship with you- AMP].”
“Do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). Begin to pray now, ask the Holy Spirit into your heart. Let Him take control of all you say and do. “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all” (2 Corinthians 13: 14).
