Topic: One Of You Is Going To Betray Me!
Text: John 13: 21- 22
21 After He had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.” 22 His disciples stared at one another, at a loss to know which of them He meant. Amen
Jesus loved His disciples so much and would do anything for their safety and comfort, but He knew that not all loved Him as much. One was going to betray Him! But who was it going to be then, especially since they all appeared to love Him too? Did they not eat together, go to same places together, listen to the Master’s instructions and execute it to the best of their ability? Who could it be then, planning to betray the Master?
Surprisingly, as they stared one unto the other, wondering who was so insensitive to do such a thing, the “betrayer” also stared at others and appeared to equally wonder who it was the Master was talking about. Well, he did this not because he didn’t know it was him the Master was referring to. He did so because that is what betrayers do to cover up what they have privately schemed or done against you. They pretend to love in public and back stab in the dark.
Beloved, this morning the Master is just too certain about the fact that one of us will be betraying Him again. Instead of asking who it will be, ask yourself whether it is you or not. Yes you! Is it not you who claim to love the Lord with all your heart, but in secret love the world and the things in it? Are you not like the Judas who had walked with Him so long and yet refused to have Him transform your old self so you can look just like Him? Making you only appear to be His faithful disciple, yet your heart remains far from repentance?
Could it not be you betraying the Lord when the deal in the office or on the internet involves 30 pieces of silver (money)? Do we not betray Him everydayness as we backbite each other, steal, lie, kill, fornicate and remain corrupt in our transactions? Especially knowing very well that as we do these things to others, we are actually doing it to Him? Is it not worse when we do all these and still mingle unrepentantly with other believers pretending to have done nothing wrong?
The Master knows us, Beloved; there is therefore no use pretending. Rather, let us meditate on this word and begin to pray. Repent of each day’s hypocrisy and “secret betrayals” over the years. Come against any seed within that makes you turn your back to Jesus every time sin knocks on your door. Ask for grace to live for Him with your whole heart, body and soul.
Never forget that the Master does not only know of a fact that some of us do betray Him, He also knows those who do. One day, He said to His disciples “Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!” (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray Him.” (John 6: 70- 71).
Refuse to be a betrayer among the chosen twelve, lest the Lord says to you one day soon; “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm–neither hot nor cold- I am about to spit you out of my mouth” (Revelations 3: 15- 16). Click: https://youtu.be/8IZ5EuddZUo
