Today’s Devotion
Topic: Lending To God
Text: Deuteronomy 24: 19, 21 – 22
19 When you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 21 When you harvest the grapes in your vineyard, do not go over the vines again. Leave what remains for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. 22 Remember that you were slaves in Egypt. That is why I command you to do this. Amen
These days everything is run on a strict budget; without which ends may not meet. Financial wisdom has become necessary as economic theories are failing to explain the many deficits we experience with our income on the trade market.
We plan and over-strategize our finances so tight that there’s actually no room for generosity and charity; no “no-way”. We feel compassion for the less privileged and wish we could help but for our tight budget.
Today’s bible passage is therefore encouraging us to make room and provision for our wonderful but deprived brothers and sisters; be they struggling foreigners, orphans and widows. So we may be blessed in all the works of our hands.
So the next time “you are harvesting in your field and you overlook a sheaf, do not go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigner, the fatherless and the widow. That is to say, when you would plan, make room for those who will depend on your overflow for sustenance.
Consciously have them in your mind whenever you gain any rewards from your labour. To make it easier for you to help, always remember that “you were also a slave in Egypt”. You have been a stranger in a foreign land before; you may have been stranded one way or the other and needed help just as they do now.
Do not turn your back on them because you will get nothing from them in return for your generosity. “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and He will reward them for what they have done (Proverbs 19: 17).
Therefore begin to pray. Ask God for a heart, sensitive enough to the plight of others. Remember, “religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world” (James 1: 27).
