Topic: A Message To Church Workers (Self Assessment )
Background: Paul had labored across the length and breadth of Asia Minor. Now he was on his way to Jerusalem and calls for the Elders of the church of Ephesus. He tells them “Now I know that none of you among whom I have gone about preaching the kingdom will ever see me again”. Amidst tears, he instructs them about what to do and prepare for in his absence. Kindly read the farewell message below and share with us it relevance to all church workers of our time.
Text: Acts 20: 28- 32, 36
“28 Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He bought with His own blood. 29 I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. 30 Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.
31 So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears. 32 “Now I commit you to God and to the word of His grace, which can build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified. 36 When Paul had finished speaking, he knelt down with all of them and prayed. Amen
QUESTIONS:
- What does it mean to “keep watch” over oneself and over the people of God?
- Why do you think church workers must WATCH THEMSELVES even as they keep watch over the flock God has given them? Is it advisable to do one and ignore the other? If not, why?
- Why will it be useful for Christian workers to keep in mind always that the people they lead are God’s own special people BOUGHT WITH HIS OWN BLOOD?
- Who are the savage wolves Paul is talking about in verse 29 and why must the church be wary of them?
- Is it possible for men who have known the truth to rise up and distort the truth as Paul retorts in verse 30? What will be their motive and interest then?
- In verse 32, Paul prays for them and commits them to God and the Word of His grace. How useful is the word of God in building us up and giving us an inheritance among the sanctified?
