Today’s Devotion
Topic: The Ultimate Reward
Text: Isaiah 49: 4
But I said, “I have laboured in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing at all. Yet what is due me is in the Lord’s hand, and my reward is with my God.” Amen.
The resources of life are harnessed for economic benefit through an activity called WORK. It involves the application of both the intellectual and physical abilities of an individual to either solve problems or discovering better ways of improving social living, FOR A REWARD.
Work is not always fun; it can be stressful, demanding and frustrating. The demands of work do not necessarily adapt to meet the peculiar circumstances of the individuals engaged in it, the individual does. He/she must adapt to the changing demands of the job without fail.
Due to the demanding nature of work, there are some “motivating factors” to encourage individuals and give them reasons to offer more. These REWARDS include: salaries or wages, bonuses, individual satisfaction with the job, career development opportunities with a particular employment and the individual’s desire not to remain idle.
Unfortunately, the REWARDS OF WORK do not always correlate with demands of the job, neither do they always meet the expectations of workers. In effect, most individuals are demotivated about work. There is no drive, no enthusiasm, no initiative; just apathy.
But beloved, there is yet another motivating factor to explore, that is, to realise that God is the Ultimate REWARD for our labour. It is He who compensates for the early hours we rise to work, the long queues we join at the bus stations to get to work, the “scorches” of the sun we bear, the sleepless nights we endure thinking about work and our insufficient salaries.
He rains blessings over our “little rewards” from work, so they may multiply to meet the needs of the family, with surplus for tomorrow.
So “whatever you do; work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” (Colossians 3: 23). For what is due you is in the Lord’s hands. He is your reward. Begin to pray now! See you at church!
