Topic: The Unbelief of the Believer
Text: Joshua 2: 9- 11
9 and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.
11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below. Amen
Joshua secretly sent two spies from Shittim. “Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rehab and stayed there. (Josh 2:1)
Rehab may have been a prostitute but her depth and intelligence is highly commendable. She and her country men may have been “foreign” to the God of Israel, but had heard so much about His awesome greatness; such that, the mere thought of having to encounter this God in battle sends shivers down their spine. She was willing to abandon her sinful lifestyle, know this great God, plead salvation on behalf of her whole family and be a part of God’s chosen people.
Israel on the other hand never fully regarded Jehovah’s awesome great power. They complained, murmured, and grumbled against Him all the time. They even went as far as getting a replacement for Him. They told Aaron “come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him. (Exodus 32: 1b).
Much earlier, when Moses had sent the 12 spies to survey the land Canaan in Numbers 13, they came back with a very “faithless” report. They said “the people who live there are powerful and the cities are fortified and very large. We can’t attack those people; they are stronger than we are. We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked same to them. Wow!
Beloved, why do we reduce our God to a slow, incompetent, inactive and unsure One when the nations revere Him as the greatest God of all? Rehab told the spies “for the Lord your God is God in the heaven above and on the earth below. You always ask “but how did we not trust in God’s greatness?”
It’s in the way we grumble and complain, the way we melt at the slightest opposition we encounter. It’s in the way we often want to take matters into our own hands and fight for ourselves. It’s in all the “FAITHLESSNESS” we display throughout our walk with Him.
Begin to pray all your anxieties and faithlessness away. Our God is both MIGHTY and ABLE to see us through every obstacle and challenge we face. Ours is to walk obediently before Him and trust Him. He never fails.
